Welcome to Barbazan, home to flora, fauna and fungi

ABOUT

Organic flower farm

run by passionate gardeners

Lisa & Andrew Ghio took over the 150-year-old farmland called Barbazan in 2020, with the vision of aprocching the local ecology through experimental horticulture & interdisciplinary exchange.

With the help of many minds, gardeners, artists and local heroes Barbazan became a blooming farm and a garden for ecological and creative exchange.

The farm grows flowers and harvest wild growing plants such as grasses, mushrooms and foliage. The concept behind the combination of planting and foraging lies in the celebration of seasonal diversity. Polyculture is our key  – as diversity is only a matter of embracing what's already there.

The Farm

Historic farmland in Gascony

The 200year old farm and former vinery is located in southwest France, in the rolling pastoral foothills of the Pyrenees. At the farm we cultivate flowers, shrubs, herbs and source wild crops, such as fungi and foliage.
Our focus lays on diversity .
The farm we run is not only about flowers, but around a diverse set of environments that we maintain for a large
diversity in our crops and products. We produce dried and fresh flower designs, décor and foods.

The Ecology

Farming in a multitude of habitats

The farm has a total of 14,5 hectares, with very distinguished habitats, such as wild meadows, forest and wetlands. The property streches along a hill with south and north facing slopes, which come with both dry and humid conditions. The riverbeds lay in the valley and create a wet and windy climate, while the hilltop hosts a oak forest with a dry and rocky environment. The diversity in microclimates is the richness of the place and one good reason why we became flower farmers...

The Team

With a diversity of minds

Andrew and Lisa Ghio are the founders of Barbazan and run the farm year-round. However, Barbazan is not just run by two people, but by a multifaceted network of passionate gardeners, researchers, artists, and multi-talented individuals who provide systematic and practical support to the farm. We are proud of our team, which is as diverse as the environment in which we live in. Our transdisciplinary team is our magic key to a florishing diversity.
